Researchers and references are available. All data was horizontally interpolated to the Atmosphere-Ocean Model's 4x3 grid. The Fortran source programs that were used to convert the observational data to the Model's 4x3 DataFile format are accessible via the link in this sentence.

If you intend to download several DataFiles, it will be more efficient to use the AOM web site's anonymous ftp site where the DataFiles actually reside.
From a UNIX prompt, enter: ftp aom.giss.nasa.gov
For Name enter: anonymous
For Password enter your E-mail address or anything.
Change directory to the 4x3 data: cd 4X3/OBS
Useful commands when using anonymous ftp sites are: binary , dir , cd , pwd , get , mget , quit .
You should execute binary before getting any DataFiles.
Make sure that the size of the DataFile you obtained is identical to that on the ftp site.

You may want to download QDF.FOR which is a Fortran program that lists the record titles of a DataFile.
